What is RESP-FIT Accreditation and What are the Benefits?

RESP-FIT Accreditation

What is RESP-FIT and why was it established?

RESP-FIT accreditation is a way for you to demonstrate your competence in conducting fit testing. It involves a two-stage assessment where applicants demonstrate theoretical and practical skills in general fit testing knowledge against a chosen fit test methodology.

RESP-FIT was established to ensure competence of fit test operators and subsequent safety of workers wearing tight fitting respiratory protection. RESP-FIT is an initiative of the Australian Institute of Occupational Health (AIOH).

What does it mean for me and what methodologies are there?

While becoming accredited is not an explicit legal requirement, it is evidence of competency for your customers, employer, or people you are fit testing.

The three methodologies are:

  • Qualitative (QLFT) – Aerosol Taste Test (ATT)
  • Quantitative (QNFT) – Ambient aerosol condensation nuclei-counting (CNC)
  • Quantitative (QNFT) – Controlled Negative Pressure (CNP)

Applicants can attempt accreditation for multiple methodologies either in one assessment or separately.

What is the RESP-FIT accreditation process and costs?

We believe strongly in fit testers becoming accredited, with the main benefit being that fit testers have been assessed against the methodology they are using for their fit testing. This means reliable and consistent fit testing is being undertaken.

For a business, from a reputational standpoint it also means that the provider takes compliance seriously and is willing to invest in their staff and the business.

For individuals it is a good addition to your CV/Resume and opens up employment opportunities.
